‘Sulthan‘, which features Karthi in the lead, knocked on screen this Friday. Here is our review of the latest box office release.
Napoleon plays the role of a ferocious gangster who has got a hundred henchmen at his beck and call. His son Vikram, fondly addressed by a henchman as Sulthan, is brought by the gang after his mother’s death. Lal, a Malayalam actor, plays the role of Sultan’s father in the gang.
When his father dies, Sultan, a robotic engineer in Mumbai, gets cut off when the city commissioner is hell-bent on ending the rest of the gang. Sulthan buys time and tells the top cop that he will rectify the troublemaker, whom he calls brother. To accomplish this task, the sultan takes them to a village, which needs their helping hands. The protagonist there meets and falls in love with an idealistic woman (Rashmika Mandana). Is Sulthan successful in his mission, what the rest of the film is about.
Writer-director Bakhshiraj Kannan scripts a masala film that usually avoids the pitfalls of a sutra film. This is not to say that ‘Sulthan’ is evident from the template-driven story-copy. There are tropes that look very old, but the film, overall, passes the grade.

Karthi is notable in the role of a young man who is torn between many emotions. After tough roles in ‘Khaki’ and ‘Khadi’, the actor once again proves his versatility. His performance in scenes with his rowdy brothers is superb. Rashmika Mandana appeared like a Flipkart girl in the trailer. But it is revealed that the actress has played a soulful character. His performance is impressive.
Prabhas’s ‘Saho’ fame Lal is consistently good, so are others like Yogi Babu. Arzai who plays the role of one of the gang members who wants to do the best sultanan has done a neat job and is therefore the actor who portrays Michael. The actors playing the role of gangsters play all their parts well and it is thanks to them that the otherwise simple story gets its freshness.
If Lord Krishna sided with the Kauravas instead of the Pandavas then its theme is well underlined by the writer-director in the film. The action sequences are performed with honesty. In the second half, not only does the plot thicken, but the emotions also become a roller-coaster ride.
The aspect of the miscreants becoming farmers and rescuing a village is exciting. The film gives this idea quite an attractive effect.
On the other hand, villains are very weak at times. Is a corporate villain whose only agenda is to harass the troubled farmers of the village. The film could have avoided the thrust factor for good.
Vivek Mervin’s songs are filled with the birth of Kollywod-esque. Yuvan Shankar Raja has provided a lively background score that enhances the visuals. Sathyan is capable of cinematography of Sooryan and editing of Reuben.
‘Sulthan’ a reasonably engaging emotional action drama.
