‘Battala Ramaswamy Biopikku‘, which left a theatrical release and streaming on ZEE5, is a village-based comedy-drama. Here is our review of the film.
Battala Ramaswamy (Altaf Hasan) This desire to be single for life. A lower-middle class fellow, he also dreams of setting up a textile shop in his village in Godavari. He falls in love with one Jayaprada and marries her. As fate would have it, he marries his sister Jayasudha. Shortly, he also ends up marrying Sridevi, a client who is fond of her.
Three marriages rob him of his peace. What happens next is the crux of the second half.
Battala Ramaswamy Biopikku Analysis:
Movies have always made fun of womanizing babas and polygamous men. The film brings together two sets of cine outcasts to create a far-reaching comedy. Comedian Bhadram becomes a fake Baba, while Ramaswamy realizes to his shock that he is destined to marry about half the young women. There comes a point when she is presumed dead, from which we express our deepest condolences to the unmarried girls of her village.
We are told that life is full of twists by a narrator who tells the audience that everything that is happening in Ramaswamy’s life is very strange (as if we would not have known it otherwise). There are dangers everywhere in Ramaswamy’s life, but after a point, he appears to be enjoying everyone while facing helplessness. He asks no existential questions, even if one shocking development after another ruins his peace. All existential questions belong to an audience condemned to watch the 145-minute long skit.
Wives exist to marry Ramaswamy. They only kept their differences apart at night. They go for a four and one of them can’t stop describing the mischievous night to Tom, D and Harry. Speaking of D, there is a scene where Ramaswamy suffers from an almost manhood-threatening injury. This is where their love story really takes away. After all, beautiful women would be worried about Ramaswamy’s manhood, right?
The film tries to be a half-hearted adult comedy with a double entender built around lovemaking and private parts. There is a lot of noise between every two characters, and their ‘Tamasha’ is seen in broad daylight throughout the village.
Director Ram Narayan has set out to make an epic wife comedy without giving an idea about the psychology of women. The differences between wives and husbands are so foolish that even rape ‘Humau’ is not left in peace.
The performances in this otherwise moist squib of a village comedy are somewhat watchable. The film is too long.
An oddball wedding comedy falls flat to make this attempt. The story of this film should have been a 20-minute comedy track in a film. Ramaswamy feels more like a friend of a male lead than a male lead. His frustrations are sketches and his comical hunt is immature.
